Why do I need a Rear Differential Anyway?
Our treasured customers are often surprised to find out that there is a special component on all modern vehicles that allows the outside wheel to turn faster than the inside while cornering. Without a rear differential, your Cadillac vehicle would have a pretty poor driving experience because both wheels would turn at the exact same speed while you were trying to steer around a curve. The rear differential has many moving parts including gears that change to allow your outside wheel to turn faster than the inside. However, your rear differential has parts and a lubricating fluid that allows it to do its job. Unfortunately, the parts can wear out and the fluid can become contaminated over time. When that happens, you will know that there’s a problem because of the noise.
